Joop Sanders: The Last Abstract Expressionist

The Last Abstract Expressionist is a retrospective of works by League alumnus Joop Sanders. The exhibition at the Foundation includes two 1945 portraits–one of Sanders by Elaine de Kooning and one of her by Sanders. Examples from the 1950s range from abstract expressionist paintings to important collages. Works from the late 60s show that Sanders also experimented with what he termed “variables”, which were a series of panels that could be hung in different combinations.

Paul Gardère: Vantage Points

Vantage Points delivers a loosely chronological, condensed version of Paul Gardère's trajectory through a range of styles from the early 1970s to the late 2000s. Throughout this expansive body of paintings, mixed media works, and works on paper, there is a continuous thematic focus on the artist’s Haitian experience and Haitian culture, both in Haiti and in the diaspora.

Angels Above Fear

John Hultberg's distinguished career spans over four decades, with numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. A maverick who never fit neatly into any painting category, Hultberg forged a highly original style—variously described as Apocalyptic, Surreal, Sci-Fi, Melodramatic, Visionary, or Romantic—characterized by dark, moody landscapes incorporating architectural and figurative elements.

This exhibition celebrates the late artist Pacita Abad (1946-2004) as a Philippine painter. Born in Batanes, the Philippines’ northernmost province, Pacita left the country in 1970, resided in 14 cities, and traveled to over 60 countries, living a peripatetic life.

Deborah Kass | The Art History Paintings 1989-1992

From 1989-1992 Deborah Kass created The Art History Paintings, a series that established themes and strategies she would deploy for the rest of her career. Sourcing images from art history and popular culture, Kass examined how meaning, power, and value were constructed by the traditional narratives of art history. These works were created in the context of 1980s, a decade in which women painters and people of color were routinely excluded from galleries and museum exhibitions.
