‍

Knox Martin: Legacies casts a light on Martin’s encyclopedic grasp of art history, design, aesthetics and ethics in art. Many of the works exhibited were pulled from the walls of Martin’s home and his son, Jonathan Martin’s, private collection. The exhibition unites major works such as GOD, Homage to Jan De Heem, The Crucifixion and Leda and the Swan, revealing the rigorous intellect and humor underpinning the vibrant visual language Martin developed over nearly seven decades. In addition to his remarkable body of art work, Martin was a prolific and beloved teacher who shared everything he knew on art history and art-making while encouraging his artists to develop their own unique perspective. Included in the exhibition is a selection of paintings created by longtime students of Martin’s and the Art Students League.
