Terence Coyle, Central Park Carriage Ride, New York City, watercolor on paper, 14 x 21 in.

Part of the ongoing series League Lineages, this exhibition traces the artistic relationships of the late artist and longtime League instructor Terence Coyle (1925-2020). From doodles in the margins of his geometry notebooks as child growing up in New England to the fully-fleshed-out canvases of his mature artistic production in New York in the decades after World War II, Coyle was a consummate observer of everyday life. The works in this exhibition represent many of the spaces critical to Coyle’s oeuvre—the street, the studio, the café or bar, the landscape. In tracing the lineage of artists preceding and succeeding Coyle, we can parse the techniques and influences of over a century of artmaking at the League.

The exhibition features works by Coyle along with his instructors and his students, including Gregory d'Alessio, Randy Faerber, Robert Beverly Hale, Vincent Malta, William Charles McNulty, Madeline Morales, Joseph Pennell, and Joseph Stouter.
