Studio 13, 1st Floor

The perception of oil painting as an intricate chemistry fit only for the advanced artist has created a sense of mystery surrounding the medium. It is true that the practice of oil painting requires some basic understandings of the materials involved, but it is by no means out of reach to anyone with a willingness to learn its secrets. Join Jeff Olson, the Art Education Director for Royal Talens North America, for an informative and revealing look into the history of oil painting, its composition, and the working properties of the medium. The talk will include a discussion and live demonstration with Art Students League artists K.C. Amable and Kayla James on a variety of oil painting techniques and applications.

K.C. Amable and Kayla James are Seeds of the League alumni. Seeds of the League is the Art Students League of New York’s community youth program. Seeds partners with public schools and social service organizations across New York City to provide arts programming where it would otherwise not be accessible.

Seeds allows under-supported artists ages 8 and up to study with renowned instructors at the Art Students League for free. Since its founding, Seeds of the League has given out more than 650 scholarships. Thousands more students have been reached through the program and encouraged to pursue careers in the arts. Seeds students have gone on to earn over $1,000,000 in college scholarships and built careers in a diversity of creative fields: they are now architects, teachers, illustrators, animators and more.
