Larry Poons, Swanno Mt., 2005.

Each year, the Art Students League reaches 5,000 students of all ages through our unique atelier-based art education. For nearly one hundred fifty years, our legendary history has been shaped by a mission to provide an accessible fine art education to all who seek it.

Art Students League instructors and students continue to define American art — from Jackson Pollock to Mark Rothko, from Louise Bourgeois to Ai WeiWei, from Georgia O'Keeffe to Pacita Abad, and on and on.

The Art Students League's annual gala raises funds to keep arts education within reach for all New Yorkers and provides hundreds of scholarships. Through our Seeds of the League community program, we reach 8,000 New York City school children each year in underserved areas across the city. The arts help underserved students succeed: nearly 100% of Seeds students have gone on to college and to develop careers in the arts.

Join us this November for an evening of cocktails, dinner, and entertainment at the Museum of Modern Art to raise funds to support scholarships and all League programming.

Honorees

Larry Poons

An American abstract painter, Poons studied at the Art Students League of New York, and taught at the League from 1966 to 1970.  He currently teaches at the League (since 1997).

Associated with Op Art, Hard-edge painting, Color Field painting, Lyrical Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism, Poons has challenged critical expectations throughout his career, transitioning through several distinct phases of work. According to New York Times critic Roberta Smith, "Since emerging in the 1960s, Mr. Poons has shown a strong preference for allover fields of pulsing color, even if his means of achieving them have varied enormously.“

Poons has works in dozens of collections throughout the world: MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Tate in London, and the Whitney.

Beth Rudin DeWoody

An American art patron, collector, curator, and philanthropist, Beth studied at the League in 1969 as a teenager and bought her first work from an instructor there! She serves as President of the Rudin Family Foundation, and sits on the boards of the Whitney Museum of American Art since the mid-1980s, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Creative Time, The New School University, Design Museum Holon in Israel, New Yorkers for Children, New York City Police Foundation, the Photography Steering Committee at the Norton Museum of Art located in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
