William Merritt Chase, Fish Still Life, 1908, oil on canvas, 26 1/4 x 30 1/2 in. Permanent Collection, the Art Students League of New York.

This exhibition celebrates the core of artmaking at the League: the atelier system of art education that foregrounds working from life. Included in this exhibition of still lifes and portraits are significant multi-generational lineages of League instructors and students. The first originates with William Merritt Chase who taught Sidney E. Dickinson. The second starts with Kenyon Cox, who taught Agnes Richmond and Kenneth Hayes Miller, the latter of whom went on to teach Peggy Bacon. Miller is honored in a portrait by colleague Reginald Marsh. The last highlights Yasuo Kuniyoshi and his student Natalie B. Baker. Sculptures by Chaim Gross and Sidney Simon complement the exhibition in the alcoves.

Featuring Peggy Bacon, Natalie B. Baker, William Merritt Chase, Kenyon Cox, Sidney Dickinson, Chaim Gross, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Kenneth Hayes Miller, Reginald Marsh, Agnes Richmond, and Sidney Simon.

Organized by Ksenia Nouril, PhD, Gallery Director and Curator of Exhibitions and Programs.
