In this lecture, celebrated artist Terryl Whitlatch will discuss Creature Design in film, graphic novels, and animation. Whitlatch has decades of experience in creature design, specializing in Animal Anatomy, Paleontological Reconstruction, and creation of Imaginary Creatures. Her clients include Walt Disney, Lucas Films, ILM Electronic Arts, Paramount, Sony, Miramax, and many others. Her work can be seen in such iconic films as Star Wars Prequels, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Jumanji, Beowulf, among many others.

This lecture, part of Umakanth Thumrugoti’s Drawing Animals class, is free and open to the public. The speaker will be joining us via Zoom.

Terryl Whitlatch

Terryl Whitlatch has decades of experience in creature design, specializing in Animal Anatomy, Paleontological Reconstruction, and creation of Imaginary Creatures. Her books include Principles of Creature Design, Science of Creature Design, Animals Real and Imagined, The Wildlife of Star Wars, and the upcoming Flying Monsters.

Umakanth Thumrugoti

Umakanth Thumrugoti is an artist, writer, and filmmaker who started his career at Walt Disney Feature Animation working on films such as Lion King, Pocahontas, Fantasia 2000, Treasure Planet, Chicken Little, and Bolt among others. While at Disney, he worked in various capacities - Technical Director, Lighting Supervisor, Sequence Supervisor, Visual Development Artist and finally as a Co-Art Director. His books include Figure It Out: A Thin Book on Figure Drawing and Broken Parts - Pies R Squared, a graphic novel. His film 7 Days In Slow-Motion was called “a bright and cheerful comedy” by Roger Ebert and won many awards.
