Learn how create cartoons from an esteemed panel of New Yorker cartoonists including Emmy-nominated Asher Perlman, Jeremy Nguyen, Suerynn Lee and Guy Richards Smit. The panel will be moderated by cartoonist Andrew Drilon.

The Art Students League of New York has a history of nurturing exceptional comics creators, from stalwarts like Peter Arno and Reginald Marsh to Roz Chast and Will Eisner. This event is part of the League's new Comics & Narrative Arts Certificate Program, which aims to foster the next generation of creatives.

Featured Speakers

Asher Perlman

Asher Perlman an Emmy-nominated, WGA award-winning, Peabody-award-winning comedian based in Brooklyn. He is currently a writer for The Late Show, a cartoonist for The New Yorker, and a performer for the WORLD. He is an alumnus of The Second City and his award-winning short film, Accountabilibuddies, was an official selection at the Just For Laughs Film Festival. He has also had two pilots premiere at the New York Television Festival.

Suerynn Lee

Suerynn Lee is a cartoonist and illustrator based in Brooklyn, NY. She has been contributing to the New Yorker magazine since 2018. Her previous clients include Ganni, Mitski, and the New York Times. Her current art practice involves creating longer handwritten texts in response to her own drawings.

Jeremy Nguyen

Jeremy Nguyen has been contributing regularly to The New Yorker since 2017. He has provided illustrations and cartoons to Netflix, HBO, Hermés, Bottega Veneta, The Strand Bookstore, and is author of the book Can I Pet Your Dog?. He teaches at Parsons School of Design in Manhattan and lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Guy Richards Smit

Guy Richards Smit’s deeply observant work traverses a wide range of cultural forms to explore themes of narcissism, desire, power and failure. The artist's work combines cultural and philosophical commentary with a fascination for pop music, rock operas and comic books. Writing in The New York Times, Roberta Smith called Smit’s work: “A tour de force that showcases his considerable talents for satire, stand-up, endurance art and painting.” He has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, The Hirshhorn Museum of Art, the Pompidou Center as well as others. In February of 2022, The New Yorker began printing the artist's cartoons.

Andrew Drilon

Andrew Drilon is an award-winning cartoonist from the Philippines currently working for DC Comics (Shazam, DC Pride). His first book, Kare-Kare Komiks, won the Manila Critics Circle National Book Award and his comic, Lines and Spaces, won the Neil Gaiman Philippine Graphic/Fiction Award. He is also currently working on a creator-owned comics series, Secret Heart Attack.
