Paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe and Eugene Edward Speicher

The League honors the legacy of alumna Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) with a special installation of her world-renowned still-life painting Dead Rabbit and Copper Pot (1908) alongside her realist portrait, which was painted around the same time by classmate Eugene Edward Speicher. O’Keeffe is currently the subject of a solo exhibition To See Takes Time on view at The Museum of Modern Art through August 12.

At the League, O’Keeffe studied with instructors Kenyon Cox, F. Luis Mora, and William Merritt Chase. While she had yet to develop her mature style, the young artist reveled in the potentiality of the still life, as cited in our Linea article: “I loved the color in the brass and copper pots and pans, peppers, onions, and other things we painted… the painting had to be alive with paint and a kind of dash and ‘go’ that kept us looking for something lively.” This reminiscence is a testament to O’Keeffe close attention to detail and her free spirit.
